Frankfort Update

Booster Seat Law Improvements Get Past First Baby Step

Despite Republican Opposition

Legislation to protect children in vehicles with better booster seats barely passed the Transportation Committee in Frankfort today with a vote along party lines. Engineers, scientists, and physicians, said booster seat rules need to conform to best practices to prevent serious injuries due to improper positioning. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading causes of death in kids ages 3 to 14 years. Almost all the Republicans opposed any changes and voted against improving the current Booster Seat Law. One conservative Republican said she opposed it because it was too much regulation. We suppose they didn’t like hearing about the scientific facts concerning proper belt positioning with their distrust of science. Conservatives could be heard complaining about too much government and the nanny state. This new Booster Seat Law has been killed several times by the Republican controlled Senate. However, Kentucky Democrats said they will never stop trying to reduce child injuries and fatalities in this regard.

Not So Solid South

Sandy Hook, KY
SANDY HOOK, Ky. -- In 1988, the band Alabama scored a No. 1 country hit with "Song of the South," Bob McDill's tribute to life in rural Dixie. Twangy and anthemic, the tune entrenched itself in the Southern canon, primarily in jukeboxes and college party playlists. South of the Mason-Dixon line, its opening fiddle lick is no less a catalyst for beer-sloshing revelry than the first piano chords of Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'."

But lost on a generation of good ol' boys and fist-pumping frat brothers has been "Song of the South's" central theme: Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal and the fealty to the Democratic Party it renewed among rural, primarily white southerners.
